130th Annual Ball and Dinner Dance: The Mayo Society of New York

March 2, 2009

A great opportunity to support those in need as we near St. Patrick’s Day is to join The Mayo Society of New York and attend the 130th Ball and Dinner Dance. Honorees for this year’s Ball are Gertrude Byrne, founder of Gertrude Bryne Promotions, from Cong, Co. Mayo, and Terence G Reilly, from Surgeview, Blacksod, Belmullet, Co. Mayo.

County Mayo, located in the North West part of Ireland is County Mayo, experienced a mass exodus in the late 1800′s during the potato failures that devastated the country. In 1879, The Mayo Society of New York was founded to help meet the needs of the immigrants and families still living in Mayo. The first ball, held at Tammany Hall on December 9, 1890, saw all proceeds sent to Mayo and since 1890, the Mayo Society has continued to contribute substantial sums of money to various charitable organizations and good causes.

Every two years a world convention of Mayo societies is held in different locations such as Toronto in Canada, Manchester in England and Mayo, Ireland. If we can get our hands on that schedule, we’ll get their events posted here.

As for this year’s ball, look to Antun’s at 96-43 Springfield Blvd. in Bellrose, NY. Contact the The Mayo Society for details.
